Wheat Dinner Rolls

New thing today, made wheat dinner rolls. I used the Eating Well Recipe here. I had to shop at Fresh and Easy to find the cake flour. You use 3 cups wheat flour and 2 cups cake flour. It turned out smelling delicious, even in dough form, and cooking very well. I'm not a fan of the wheat taste, so they were "eh" for me, but the texture was really yum - moist and soft. They were a bit dry, but I think it was due to the 2nd reheating - for the actual Thanksgiving dinner. I baked them about 2 hours before we had to eat, and then they were put back in the oven for another 5 minutes about 30 minutes before we ate (not my timing but family and all?).

For wheat bread, they turned out very well! I had to do the "make ahead refrigerate overnight" version, and it was so easy and not messy. I will do this again, and possibly make sandwich rolls out of them next time :)

Black Friday Buys

New thing today, Black Friday buys! Also, some interesting observations.

First - smart people, ready to shop. I'm pretty sure this was their loot bag, not luggage they were planning on returning. Saw this at entrance to mall. It's either brilliant, or sad.

Second - Get Jiro comic book. Ordinarily I wouldn't have gotten this, but we were at a comic book store and I started reading through this. It seemed very funny and sarcastic so I picked it up. In the opening scene, there are these obnoxious Americans who go to Jiro's sushi store, and ask for sushi, obnoxiously dip it in wasabi and soy sauce, then ask for California rolls. Jiro then cuts off one guy's head with his sushi knife. There are also two chef warlords in town and a recurring taco cart vendor, so I had to buy and read this, lol.

Third - Saw this cute Star Wars Taun-Taun plush at a different nerd comic store (theme here?). Anyway I'm getting this for a nephew, but was tempted to keep it myself. Alas, the nephew will get it as he would love it.

Fourth - Thor vs Loki Hot Topic shirt. LOVED this when I saw it at the store entrance. Got a men's small size for myself, and got in line. Insanely crowded, but worth it. Also only $10 - deal!

Fifth - Flannel Sheets. Had a JC Penny gift card, and wanted flannel sheets for our place. We picked out a design, and decided to get it :)

And last but not least, a rainbow in our area around the mall. We got caught in a downpour outside an Old Navy, when the power went out and we were unable to shop there. Then later that day, outside in the Northridge CA area, we saw this beautiful rainbow outside :) Need a little rain for the rainbows :)

Happy Black Friday y'all!!!!

Three Stars (2010) - Documentary about Restaurants and Michilin

In honor of Thanksgiving! New thing today, watched Three Stars (2010), a documentary about restaurants who receive stars from the Michelin Guide. As you can probably tell from my blog, I pay attention to food. Anyway sometimes these documentaries about restaurants are fascinating. I always loved the UK version of Kitchen Nightmares. I think the work behind food and running restaurants is fascinating.

Anyway, this documentary was probably about 3 out of 5 stars. It was a lot of subtitles and reading and watching top chefs from around the world talk about food, the Michelin stars, their restaurants, etc. It's all a little superficial. It was a little interesting to watch the dinner performance/service by some of the restaurants, or watching how the different kitchens look or run, and watching how the different chefs act talking about food or how they run their restaurants. It's an amuse-bouches of top rated restaurants, rather than an in depth documentary about the Michelin Guide stars or specific restaurants.

I actually found the Wikipedia article on the Michelin Guide very interesting as I never knew where the ratings came from. Basically it was developed as a way to sell tires, and to encourage people to drive. One star - A very good restaurant in its category. Two stars - Excellent cooking, worth a detour. Three stars - Exceptional cuisine, worth a special journey. I love that this is the basis for the guide, but they don't even mention it in the documentary. Some documentary? I suppose it's for chefs or food fans who would be impressed or enjoy watching their idol chefs talk about food. There is a chef from Japan in this documentary, who has a slight "Jiro Dreams of Sushi" way about him. In fact all the chefs have a perfectionist and passionate way about them.

My favorite story might be the Italian laid back family who live and work in the same area, with their own garden, and run the kitchen in a very relaxed manner, with grandma cutting and cooking and son making pasta in the background.

This documentary is just OK. Michelin - One star - very good within a food documentary category. I think I got something out of this though, and enjoyed it.

Gangster Squad (2013)

New thing today, watched Gangster Squad (2013). It was dramatic, stylized and ok. I got bored and wasn't really invested in the story & started playing Candy Mania & Candy Crush in the middle of it. Overall I think the real life story behind it would have been more interesting than the movie. I liked all the actors and they all did a good job. I just think it was a bit much - with more style than substance. It was a lot of flash and bang, and a caricature of the time period. It almost feels like the characters were very Noir one dimensional. Great characters are relatable and dynamic, and the good vs bad guys here were just very cliche. Cool movie though if you're in the mood. Husband enjoyed it and I think I'll look up the real life story behind this.

Douglas Adams - Deadlines Quote

New thing today, read a great quote on deadlines by Douglas Adams that made me laugh.

While working on the radio series (and with simultaneous projects such as The Pirate Planet) Adams developed problems keeping to writing deadlines that only got worse as he published novels. Adams was never a prolific writer and usually had to be forced by others to do any writing. This included being locked in a hotel suite with his editor for three weeks to ensure that So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish was completed.[18] He was quoted as saying, "I love deadlines. I love the whooshing noise they make as they go by."[19] Despite the difficulty with deadlines, Adams wrote five novels in the series, published in 1979, 1980, 1982, 1984, and 1992.

New thing today, my new desktop, the Thai lantern festival. This is real. *sigh. I can only dream.

Dominos - Chocolate Lava Crunch Cake

New thing today, tried the chocolate Chocolate Lava Crunch Cake from Dominos. Crazy right? We never go for that type of stuff but we were in the mood and the photo looked interesting. Surprisingly it was quite tasty. I really did enjoy it. Maybe at another time it would be too sweet, but we were in the mood for chocolate and it tasted really really good. I'd order it again. Slightly crunchy and chocolate cakey on outside, with chocolate goo on the inside, sprinkled with powdered sugar. Yum! Probably terrible for the diet but oh well. You have to splurge once in awhile.

Vegas Roll - Omega Sushi

New thing today, tried the Vegas Roll at Omega Sushi. It had spicy seafood, cream cheese, and avocado on the inside, then outside was deep fried with spicy mayo & eel sauce. Good stuff, very fattening and not so good for the diet, so I will be working out tomorrow.

Another occasion to celebrate though. It was my nephew's first time eating out having sushi. He is 7 and was curious and wanted to try it, so we had the all you can eat sushi bar special, got a bunch of different fish and things and tried them out. He likes it! He likes Japanese food and sushi, so I am so excited! Very cool of him! Ah, young converts to Japanese food - love it!

Rice Seasoning

New thing today, tried Nori Komi Furikake Rice Seasoning. It was really great. Great flavoring not just for rice, but veggies or anything you want to experiment with. It has seaweed, sesame seeds, sugar & salt. Awesome flavoring if you like this type of stuff.

Ikea Christmas Tins

New thing today, bought some Ikea Christmas tins to prepare for gifts this holiday season. I love it! It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas. I'm excited and I'm one of those people that doesn't mind the early decorations and celebrations or planning for the holiday! Now time to plan cooking gifts and treats for the holidays. These tins are super cute and I've never bought holiday tins before specifically for gifts and things. We shall see how this goes :)

Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption by Steven King

New thing today, read Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption by Stephen King. A coworker gave me his Different Seasons by Stephen King. It's a collection of four novellas/short stories, first being "Hope Springs Eternal", this story.

This was the FIRST Stephen King story I've ever read, another first :) It was surprisingly touching and very very close to the movie. Of course, I've seen the movie and absolutely loved it. So reading the book was very close to re-watching the movie in my mind. Many of the details are the same, as well as the narrative. There are some scenes and depictions with a little more dramatic movie license, but overall the story translated well both in book and in movie. I might even say, this is the first time I've seen a book and movie be so close in spirit and story.

In the book, the narrator is a red haired white guy, whereas Morgan Freeman is "Red" in the movie. Also, the story of Brooks is told more dramatically and heartbreakingly in the movie, whereas in the book Brooks is a very minor and offhandedly mentioned character. The themes are the same though.

If I had never watched the movie, I would be bored to tears by the story and possibly never read or finish it. Books usually have to grab me hard in the beginning, making the introduction very essential. It would have to be poignant, interesting, suspenseful or exciting. As I've heard a few people say, Stephen King's stories are a slow start. This one was especially true. It just starts off kind of dull and without really a point, but with a lot of description and narrative. Because I loved the movie, the story was easier to read through, and took me back to the movie and unfolding of the story. It unfolds as the movie does.

I was impressed :) Best part is, my favorite quotes and lines from the movie are from the book. The director/screenwriter kept those, pretty much exactly the same. The ones below are probably my favorite. They unfold in the story very well :)

"We're glad he's gone, but a little sad, too. Some birds are not meant to be caged, that's all. Their feathers are too bright, their songs too sweet and wild. So you let them go, or when you open the cage to feed them they somehow fly out past you. And the part of you that knows it was wrong to imprison them in the first place rejoices, but still, the place where you live is that much more drab and empty for their departure."

"Dear Red,
If you're reading this, then you're out. One way or another, you're out. And if you've followed along this far, you might be willing to come a little further. I think you remember the name of the town, don't you? I could use a good man to help me get my project on wheels.

Meantime, have a drink on me - and do think it over. I will be keepnig an eye out for you. Remember that hope is a good thing, Red, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies. I will be hoping that this letter finds you, and find you well.

Your friend,
Peter Stevens"

I think King has a lot of quote gems in this story. I think if I re-read this book 2 years from now I would find something else that touched me. He just seems to have a way about storytelling. You can just tell there's so much brimming, so much going on that he wants to tell, and he manages to artfully put it all together into words, images and weaving them beautifully together into stories.

Next in the book is Apt Pupil, subtitled, "Summer of Corruption". We want to watch the movie so maybe I'll wait to read it, who knows? There's also Stand By Me or The Body "Fall from Innocence" and finally The Breathing Method "A Winter's Tale". Very clever book, Different Seasons :) I have a new respect for Stephen King and will need to check out some of his other stories and books.

This was a very nice read :) Great new discovery and new thing of the day :)

Moe's Deli Food Truck - Naked Big Moe Brisket

New thing today, tried Moe's Deli Food Truck. Our work hosted the truck, and we got to try a limited menu. I got the Char-Siu brisket but "Naked" where they put it in a rice wrapper and vegetables, and Chinese aioli on the side. It was quite tasty, but the brisket was sweet which was a little odd. I only ate half, and thought it was just ok. The other half I ate later, but when I microwaved it, it was much tastier. I think I prefer warm vegetables and rolls, rather than cold wrap type foods.

New thing, good and I would try it again.

Disneyland Buttons!

New thing today, we got buttons at Disneyland! We went for my mom's birthday so my sister said we had to get her a button. I've never done that, and it turned out pretty cool. We went to a place where they give out buttons and asked for one for her for her birthday. They wrote her name on it. Then my sister and I both got one that said "Just Graduated" since I just got my Masters and my sister is getting her Bachelor's at the end of this year. My husband just got one that said "I'm celebrating" for nothing at all really. Then I saw a couple with a Happy Anniversary button and asked if we could get that, since last year husband and I came to Disneyland for our wedding anniversary. We got that and Happily Ever After as well!

So all day my mom was wearing her birthday button and everyone kept greeting her. It was cute and a little annoying because they kept congratulating her, but it was pretty cool :) I was happy she was enjoying herself and getting birthday attention! It's very cute.

Lots of fun! I will be getting buttons from now on and wearing them over there :) It's cute how Disney keeps a fun spirit and new things for those who have been there a ton of times already. Always new things :)

Disney Clothes!

New thing today, bought and will wear Disney clothes while at Disneyland! We're going for my mom's birthday, and we all decided to wear Disney shirts or sweaters from Hot Topic as there was a sale.

I love Alice in Wonderland stuff and they had this great sweater with the tea party on it! The Chinese lanterns remind me of my wedding and I love tea, so cute! I also love Lilo & Stitch so had to get the shirt below too :) So fun!

Mimi's Cafe Signature Dish Bouillabaisse

New thing today, tried Mimi's Cafe Bouillabaisse. It looks just like the advertisements and marketing photos. It was amazingly delicious! It was also super healthy and low in Weight Watchers points! Fabulous stuff. The only thing about Mimi's is I get super slow service whenever we're there, but this was delicious so it might be worth it. Will be going back for it - yum! Hearty, delicious, filling and healthy.

Sauerkraut with Hot Dog at Costco

New thing today, had sauerkraut with my hot dog from Costco. I didn't even know you could do that, until today. Saw a sign up by the onions saying, if you want sauerkraut please go to window. So I did, and got some. It was ok sauerkraut, but just awesome to know I can get it and add it to the dog. Also relatively healthy too which is awesome. Yeay kraut! My dog had mustard, onions and new thing today, sauerkraut :)

Something Wicked This Way Comes - Movie (1983)

New thing today, watched Something Wicked This Way Comes the movie. It was pretty terrible. I was bored. Loved loved loved the book. This movie was dull and uninteresting. Terrible acting I thought and doesn't hold a candle to the creepiness or tone of the book. Another disappointing book to movie. Eh.

Candy Crush vs Candy Blast Mania

New thing today, played Candy Crush & Candy Blast Mania. I know I'm late to the game, but some coworkers were talking about this, and it was a slow day, so I decided to add and try both games. FUN! I am definitely addicted. I like puzzle games, and I like the candy more than the Bejeweled jewel icons, so I enjoyed both games candy games thoroughly.

Although I think my favorite is probably Candy Blast Mania. I like the music and graphics, as well as the challenges a lot more than I like Candy Crush. Candy Crush also has this annoying thing where you have to play quests to get to the next set of levels, and it's a little annoying when you want to keep playing.

Another major difference is the time difference between when you can earn more lives. Candy Crush is shorter, only 30 minutes, whereas Candy Blast Mania is an hour. Overall though, I play both at the same time so I have lives and can play awhile.

Below are some screen shots. Sorry not very intellectual post. Play and decide for yourself :) Have fun!

Pineapple Pie

New thing today, made pineapple pie. Husband likes pineapple, we had extra pie crust from the pumpkin pie, so decided to try making a pineapple pie. I'd never had a pineapple pie before, and neither had husband, but just decided to try it. I picked out this Pineapple Pie recipe from AllRecipes.com - because it was the most simple/straightforward. The pie was ridiculously easy to make and really yummy. We tried it warm and it was good, but then we had it cold and it was so so good. I am  a fan of this pineapple pie and we will be making it again! I substituted Splenda for the sugar and it turned out so good, and relatively healthy.
