WWE - CM Punk vs John Cena - Money in the Bank 2011
New thing of the day, watched the WWE - CM Punk vs John Cena - Money in the Bank 2011 match. The husband likes wrestling. Even as a kid I didn't think it was real. My friends were all like "no that's totally real" and I was like "you can't change the rules in the middle of a real game" and stuff.
Anyway I promised the husband I would watch a full match with him. Overall I was impressed by the athletics and stunts. Not a fan of the drama, although at times it was amusing. I really liked one move where CM Punk did a superman flying leap through the ropes to tackle John Cena. There were some impressive and painful looking wrestling moves.
I tried it and, well, next time I may watch along and pay attention to some of the flips, grabs and moves. We saw a live amateur wrestling match once, and I was really impressed because live and up close it looks like a lot of work, stunts and technique to do that much. So when watching it on TV I tried to appreciate that part of it.
I think the thing that bothers me, is the fake stress or holds. I feel like for some of that you can grapple/move your way out of things, but of course they're being dramatic about how tired, how immobilized or how hurt they are. Even the commentators are funny because they are so intense and serious about it all, when I can tell it's totally not how a fight would go down. You don't give your opponent time to recover. You don't do these crazy things that require coordination and help from the other guy. It's just too unbelievable. The theatricality of it is a bit much for me but I do appreciate the stunt and body work of the wrestlers.
So ya. I was surprised and impressed with some of the wrestling. Not really to my taste. Ran a bit long, but I told my husband it might be like a fine wine, takes time to get to the good stuff. Some of the best moves were peppered in throughout the end.
As for theatricality, I feel like that stuff at the end of the match was kind of dumb. The "no wait" and the drama and larger backstory to the wrestling match is hard for me to get into.
That said, CM Punk and John Cena are guys with badass bodies and stunt moves which is cool. They seem like good actors and generous with their opponents in doing moves. Thumbs up!
Who knows, perhaps I will get drawn in to the theatricality, the quotes, and the overall world. I offered to watch a match live. I think that might be more entertaining. Perhaps? :) I'm not exactly adding it to my list of things to watch regularly, but I have a greater appreciation and fondness for the sport.
